Summary

The Climate and Health Advisor is a critical member of the Save the Children US (SCUS) Department of Global Health (DGH) team and will provide institutional, technical and strategic support to Save the Children’s (SC) global work to address the impact of climate change on health.

You will: assess and track global, regional and country level evidence to identify priorities for addressing the impact of climate change on health; provide technical assistance to SC Country Offices to help assess needs and opportunities; lead technical design of proposals to the Green Climate Fund, USAID and other strategic donors; and, design and support the implementation of high quality, effective, state-of-the-art programming to address the impact of climate change on health in selected high priority countries. You will also represent Save the Children’s global work to address climate and health.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Mobilize Public and Private Resources and Build Strategic Partnerships (65%)

  • Lead technical design of Green Climate Fund proposals that contribute to realizing the organization’s vision, strategy, and operational plan for addressing the impact of climate change on health.
  • Provide technical expertise to support proposals that include the impact of climate change on health for a variety of strategic donors, including USAID, foundations, and corporate donors.
  • Work across SCUS Departments (Health, Hunger and Livelihoods, Humanitarian Response, Education & Child Protection) and prioritized cross-cutting themes (Urban Health, Gender & Social Inclusion, Resilience) to provide technical expertise to address climate in sectors related to health and connect development and humanitarian assistance efforts related to climate change impacts.
  • Work with fundraising teams, U.S.-based and international-facing, to carry out funding strategies for SC’s technical and programming priorities in climate change and health.
  • Establish and maintain new/existing relationships with key donors (especially supporting and engaging with our SC Australia Office on the Green Climate Fund).
  • Establish and maintain new/existing relationships for technical programming with climate and health donors and partners.
  • Work with communications team to contribute to outreach (e.g., blogs, etc.) to promote climate and health interconnections.

Provide Technical Leadership and Support in Addressing Climate Change and Health (35%)

  • Serve as a SC expert on the impact of climate change on health within the global organization through support to country programs and participation in technical working groups.
  • Support the implementation of the agency-wide Climate & Health strategy and operational plan to apply interdisciplinary approaches to address climate and achieve co-benefits with other sectors, including coordination with SC colleagues working on child hunger, poverty, education, protection, and a variety of health topics.
  • Be accountable for achieving the results set out in the strategic plan and be able to articulate sector approaches to measuring global results and monitoring progress toward agreed upon results.
  • Provide technical expertise and oversight to ensure programs apply evidence-based interventions and approaches in our programs, and develop and support new state-of-the-art approaches.
  • Identify and pursue prioritized climate change and health program innovation and learning priorities.
  • Identify and share best practices from country programs and global work, document these practices, and disseminate and promote uptake within the agency through internal Technical Working Groups.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation, with a focus on sound data collection, analysis, and interpretation for program management, proposal development, and documentation of project innovations and impact. Support high quality baseline, midterm, and final evaluations and other program planning assessments.
  • Initiate planning and implementation of skill development/training/capacity building for Save the Children, specific to the DGH portfolio, including development and review of training materials.
  • Contribute to building alliances and strategic partnerships to influence policy and support learning and innovation.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 5 years of relevant experience implementing climate and health programming
  • Demonstrated understanding of the evidence, science and adaptation strategies to address climate change and the impacts (ongoing and projected) on health in low and middle-income countries
  • Proven successful track record in developing effective and responsive project proposals.
  • Demonstrated experience with global donors and proven successful record of fostering new and effective partnerships with international partners.
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining and environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in health (epidemiology) and/or environmental health or related field
  • International development experience in any of the following technical topics as they relate to climate change: child health, nutrition, water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH), community health, health systems, maternal and newborn health, adolescent health
  • Familiarity with the UN Green Climate Fund and/or USAID
  • Experience working on health programs across rural and urban contexts

Compensation 

Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate location:

  • Geo 1 – NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above national average: Target Salary for this position is $84,150 – $94,050 base salary
  • Geo 2 – Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $76,500 – $85,500 base salary
  • Geo 3 – Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $68,850 – $76,950 base salary

Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location.
