About the Summit

When and where does the Youth Ag Summit take place?

The Youth Ag Summit (YAS) takes place every two years. YAS 2021 will take place digitally on November 16-17 followed by a ten-week virtual incubator called “YAS University” from January to March in 2022.

What is YAS University?

“YAS University” is an entrepreneurship support program developed in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN). This ten-week incubator is aimed at developing project ideas through key insights and capacity building.

Who can attend the Youth Ag Summit?

100 young leaders aged 18-25, who are interested in agriculture, international development, environmental stewardship, food security, biotechnology, or farming, will be selected to participate in the 2021 Youth Ag Summit.  We look for participants who are true “agvocates” (advocates for agriculture) and who have an innovative project idea about how to solve future food security challenges. During YAS you will be supported on your journey to turn this idea into real action!

Who are the partnering organizations?

On the global level, Bayer will partner with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Babele. SDSN was set up in 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the UN SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement. SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society.

Babele is a technology and consulting company that works in the fields of collective intelligence, business modeling, and social impact. They have pioneered the application of open strategies and collaborative business planning, providing its programs and online platforms to universities, incubators, networks, and corporations spread across four continents.

How can I apply for the Youth Ag Summit?

Applicants need to submit an application through the application portal, consisting of (1) an application form where you answer several questions on your experience and motivation, and (2) a 3-minute video pitch where you explain your specific project idea on “how to feed a hungry planet.” We do not accept handwritten applications. All applications need to be submitted in English. You will find more information and directions in our Application Guidelines.

About Youth Ag Summit
Empowering the Next Generation

Since its inception, the Youth Ag Summit has had a concrete impact on shaping the next generation of sustainable agriculture champions. More than 400 delegates from almost 50 different countries have taken part in the program to date. Our impact goes beyond the Summits themselves. We strive to foster and support a network of “agvocates” who are committed to tackling food security and sustainability challenges in tangible ways.

Through the Youth Ag Summit, each delegate identifies Three Little Things – a personal challenge to implement their learnings in their local community. Each delegate also comes to the summit with a Thrive for Change project. Delegates will work to develop concrete project plans for their ideas and will be encouraged to implement the project upon completion of the Summit.

Planning for 2021 was significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Thus, the 2021 Summit will be held virtually on November 16-17, 2021.  But that doesn’t mean the global impact and opportunities of YAS have changed. This time, the Summit will take place over two days followed by a ten-week virtual incubator called “YAS University” in early 2022. This online accelerator platform has been developed in partnership with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) and is aimed at developing project ideas through key insights and capacity building. After completing YAS University, delegates will have the opportunity to pitch their Thrive for Change Projects to a panel of judges for potential funding, additional networking/mentorship opportunities, and other prizes.

The momentum from the Summit continues to drive action from all our agvocates. Youth Ag Summit alumni have spoken at a range of global events, from the UN Committee on Food Security in Rome and the Nuffield Farming Scholars Annual Conference to the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture and the European Development Days – to name just a few.
