Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located within the Office of the Director-General/Office of the Executive Director (ODG/ED) of the United Nations Office at Vienna and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOV/UNODC) in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent works under the overall guidance and supervision of the Chief of Office and Strategy Advisor of the Executive Director and under the direct supervision of the Policy Coordination Officer (Team Leader) of the Policy and Inter-Agency Coordination Team.

Responsibilities
Within assigned authority, the Coordination Officer will be responsible for the following specific duties:
¿ Coordinate the development and implementation of mechanisms to facilitate political analysis for the Director-General/Executive Director, acting as focal point for collection and analyses of information on political issues. With this purpose, liaise with relevant teams in UNOV/UNODC, including the Research and Trends Analysis Branch, the field office network, the New York and Brussels Liaison Offices, other entities of the Secretariat such as the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG); establish and maintain relationships with counterparts in the broader UN system, international and regional organizations, Member States, and other external partners such as think tanks and academia; prepare and/or respond to requests for information on policy and political issues; collect advice and inputs from relevant counterparts bringing matters of relevance and importance to the attention of the DG/ED; analyse political and related events of relevance to UNOV/UNODC with a view to provide early warning advice to the DG/ED; coordinate the preparation of analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high profile matters of concern; draft notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for the DG/ED.
¿ Contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of selected major interdivisional initiatives of priority to the DG/ED, led by ODG/OED. For this purpose, liaise with relevant colleagues in UNOV/UNODC and outside stakeholders and partners, facilitate inter-office coordination on significant policy, programme, operational and fundraising matters, organize inter-divisional, task force and working group meetings as required, develop policy and strategies and advise the Chief of ODG/OED and the DG/ED. Coordinate the formulation of comprehensive inter-divisional and inter-agency strategies and policies. Coordinate with UNOV/UNODC divisions to ensure consistency, coherence and application in support of DG/ED decisions.
¿ Work in close coordination with the Policy Coordination Officer (Team Leader), to support all the major tasks of the Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Team of ODG/OED.
¿ Participate in and provide substantive backstopping to relevant engagements of the DG/ED and participate in missions of the DG/ED, as requested.
¿ In close cooperation with the Policy Coordination Officer, manage the budget of ODG/OED (e.g. Umoja, budgetary and financial functions, etc.).
¿ Provide guidance and leadership to more junior personnel within the team and act as the deputy of the Policy Coordination Officer as required.
¿ Perform other work-related duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international relations, political sciences, business or public administration or related area is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in international relations, development cooperation and policy coordination is required.
Work experience in providing substantive and policy coordination advice to a high-level official in an International Organization is required.
Work experience within the United Nations system or a similar international Organization is desirable.
Experience in the area of control and prevention of drugs, crime, corruption and/or terrorism in an international setting is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This position is funded from extra budgetary resources. Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Any extension of the appointment will be subject to the availability of funding.
