ORGANISATION SUMMARY:

Climate Action Network (CAN) is a global network of more than 1,800 civil society organisations in over 130 countries driving collective and sustainable action to fight the climate crisis and to achieve social and racial justice.
CAN members work to achieve this goal through information exchange and the coordinated development of NGO strategy on international, regional and national climate issues. CAN has regional and national network hubs that coordinate these efforts around the world. The ideal candidate will have a passion for online engagement.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We are looking for a competent Global Lead – Digital Engagement to develop and execute the digital engagement strategy of Climate Action Network. This will suit a motivated and driven individual who can work both collaboratively as part of a team and also independently to advance climate justice.

Job responsabilities:

  • In direct collaboration with CAN-I’s Executive Team, facilitate the development and implementation of an integrated digital strategy and ensure its phased adoption, implementation in the CAN-I Secretariat and eventually the whole network
  • Collaborate with the CAN-I Secretariat, network, working groups and partners on integrating digital advocacy and campaigning strategies into the overall political strategy, CAN-I work plan, and individual campaigns
  • In close collaboration with CAN-I’s fundraising team, think through and integrate a clear direction and approach for the external presentation of CAN-I into the digital strategy, ensuring that an external audience (funders, members, partners, the general public) can easily understand who we are and what we do
  • Work creatively with different teams across the CAN secretariat and network to collaborate on producing fresh, engaging and unique digital products in line with CAN’s strategy of movement building and support and strengthening our online presence
  • Integrate CAN’s digital and online tools – which include, but are not limited to, the CAN website, digital action tools, constituent relationship management (CRM) system, social media accounts, newsletter, fundraising tools – into a comprehensive integrated digital advocacy infrastructure
  • Organise and facilitate a working group of digital campaigners and communicators across CAN’s network (from international members to regional and national nodes, and individual node members) to work on digital campaign strategies and tactics; and oversee and provide support for the group’s production of content for global, regional and national advocacy and campaigns
  • Build and grow CAN’s supporter base through the management of its constituent relationship management (CRM) system, and lead its deployment for campaign Call to Actions (CTAs) in line with the digital political strategy
  • Management of the CAN Website (extranet), including ensuring it is actively used as a campaigning tool; its content is of high quality and speak the CAN language and branding; its protocols for a content management system (CMS) and is SEO-friendly
  • Development and management of a CAN Community Site (intranet) to engage the network members and nodes.
  • Scope digital communication trends, and set and monitor metrics for social media analytics and impact, and adjust the digital strategy accordingly based on a proper evaluation
  • Improve and grow the CAN followership base on our social media platforms and periodically review our progress and with ET
  • Proofread, evaluate and provide feedback on, and if needed produce, digital content such as graphics, videos, podcasts, newsletters, email campaigns, campaign web pages, social media posts and others, and publish them while ensuring it is of high quality
  • Research new and innovative ways to create interactive content that stirs discussion and urges stakeholders to take action on influencing decision makers; and provide thought leadership on digital organising, campaigning and advocacy work as well as digital trends for the CAN network, and provide training when needed
  • Depending on the development of the organization and this area of work, be ready to line manage staff in the area of digital communications
  • From time to time, take on additional tasks if and when required to do so to support the delivery of the political and building power strategy

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Job-related experience & knowledge:
  • 5 – 7 years of experience in media and/or journalism work in any organisation
  • A clear political understanding of the role of civil society and movements in addressing climate change, climate justice and the intersectionality thereof, and the ability and eagerness to apply that understanding in the approach to our work
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills with good attention to detail
  • Digital campaign experience with an environmental and or climate Justice organisation.
  • Digital strategist with the ability to collaboratively design strategy as well as pro-actively implement it
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Experience in website and web content management; social media management and maintenance
  • Excellent knowledge of social media platforms and tactics
  • Knowledge in developing creative and innovative digital content, including through the use of videos, infographics and other visuals
  • Strong knowledge on video editing and graphic design
  • Fluent in English, writing and speaking, other languages are an asset
  • Knowledge of various international political negotiations around climate change and prior experience with the UNFCCC is highly desirable
  • Experience in the line management and coordination of small teams

IT SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Computer skills: advanced competence in MS Office & project management tools
  • Ability to coordinate meetings and work plans in a virtual environment and using digital tools

LANGUAGE ABILITY

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required
  • Any additional language will be an advantage

TRAVEL

  • Ability to frequently travel internationally for 2-3 weeks at a time, if and as required
