The Arab Fund for Art and Culture (AFAC) and the Prince Claus Fund, in partnership with Magnum Foundation, are now accepting proposals for the seventh cycle of the Arab Documentary Photography Programme (ADPP).
The
ADPP supports documentary photographers in the Arab region in creating
unconventional, compelling, non-stereotypical visual documentation of
social issues and narratives relevant to the Arab region. Applicants
whose proposals are selected receive a production grant, two intensive
workshops and mentoring by an established international photographer.
Over
a period of eight months the programme not only helps participants
develop their project, it also looks for ways in which their work can
reach out to wider audiences, to engage, inform and open minds.
In
past years, ADPP has proven to be a major springboard to international
recognition for emerging Arab photographers, opening the way for other
grants and awards, like the Tim Heatherington Prize, the Joop Swart
Masterclass of World Press Photo, Magnum Foundation Fellowship for
photography and Social Justice, the Canon Education Program,
CIC/Phototopia and publication in, among others, the Washington Post,
the New York Times, National Geographic, El Pais Semanal, Zeit Magazine
and Gulf Business.
Photographers may propose to work in a range of
non-fiction narrative styles, from classic documentary photography to
more experimental visual storytelling, and may propose to include audio
and video elements. The programme is open to Arab applicants living and
working in the Arab region, irrespective of age, years of experience,
ethnicity, gender or religion. Exceptions are made for Arab applicants
who had to flee their home countries during the past eight years (since
2012) due to political unrest. Their projects must however be related to
the region. Technical familiarity with photography is required.
