\nWhat is TechGirls?<\/span>
\n <\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\nTechGirls
\n is an international summer exchange program designed to empower and
\ninspire young women from the United States, Central Asia and the Middle
\nEast and North Africa to pursue careers in science and technology.<\/span><\/div>\n
\nThe
\n centerpiece of the program is a weeklong technology camp that provides
\nparticipants with an in-depth examination of technology-related topics,
\nsuch as coding and cyber security and engages them in 45+ hours of
\nhands-on instruction. The camp is complemented by additional activities
\nsuch as site visits to technology companies, leadership clinics,
\ncommunity service opportunities, job shadowing, and cultural events. As
\npart of program follow-on, the TechGirls implement at least one peer
\ntraining program or service project within their schools and\/or
\ncommunities.<\/span><\/div>\n

This is a program of the U.S. Department of State,<\/a> administered by Legacy International. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\n TechGirls connects and supports the next generation of women
\nleaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by
\nproviding them  access and opportunities to advance their skills and
\npursue their dreams.<\/p>\n

Since 2012, TechGirls trained and mentored 238 teenage girls (ages
\n15-17) from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian
\n Territories, Tunisia, and Yemen.  The core of the program is a
\nthree-week experience in the United States.  In 2019, the program
\nexpanded to include 24 young women from Central Asia (Kazakhstan,
\nKyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.)<\/p>\n

TechGirls participate in an interactive technology and computer camp
\n(with US Girls), join a tech company for a day of job shadowing, and
\nparticipate in community service initiatives. There is a TechGirls multiplier effect<\/a> \u2013 inspiring others in their local community to pursue Stem.<\/span><\/p>\n

TechGirls is packed with skill-development workshops and interactions with America\u2019s most innovative tech professionals<\/a> as
\n well as 45 hours of study at a Tech Camp with our partner the Center
\nfor Enhancement in Engineering Diversity at Virginia Tech. 
\nThe TechGirls program offers  a rich cultural immersion experience,
\nimproves the participants\u2019 ability to enter tech fields and encourages
\nthem to pursue higher education in fields where women are
\nunder-represented.<\/span><\/p>\n

TechGirls is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs<\/a>. The
\n Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs\u2019 (ECA) mission is to
\nincrease mutual understanding between the people of the United States
\nand the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural
\nexchange that assist in the development of peaceful relations.  The
\nprogram is administered by Legacy International.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n TechGirls participants attend leadership clinics, tailored tech
\ntalks, and have workshops on career options, project planning, and
\nhigher education opportunities.   The core tech training is a
\nchallenging Java programming class under the expert guidance of Virginia
\n Tech\u2019s computer science faculty.<\/p>\n

TechGirls is a comprehensive, customized program that equips
\nparticipants with tech skills to meet the demands of the growing
\nindustry, as well as the soft skills to enable them to apply what they
\nhave learned to the issues of their local communities. Follow-on
\ncommunity-based projects are designed to reinforce and support the
\nskills and linkages acquired during the U.S. program, provide additional
\n young women back home with tech training, promote community engagement,
\n and set young women on educational and career tracks.<\/p>\n
