\nThe Award<\/h3>\n

The Royal Society Athena Prize is awarded biennially (in even years)
\nfor teams working in UK academic and research communities, who have
\ncontributed most to the advancement of diversity in science, technology,
\n engineering and mathematics (STEM) within their communities. The
\nrecipients of the prize receive a medal and a gift of \u00a35,000.<\/p>\n

The Royal Society is committed to promoting and increasing diversity in science<\/a>,
\ntechnology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). A diverse and inclusive
\nscientific workforce draws from the widest range of backgrounds,
\nperspectives and experiences thereby maximising innovation and
\ncreativity in science for the benefit of humanity. Our work on diversity
\nin science includes addressing barriers to participation and success
\nand actions to support and inspire change. This prize aims to inspire innovation and leadership in STEM diversity issues.<\/p>\n

The Royal Society Athena Prize was established in 2016 and is provided by a gift to the Society.<\/p>\n

\nPast winners <\/h3>\n

Dr Emma Chapman was awarded the Athena Prize 2018 for driving
\nnationally impactful policy changes concerning sexual harassment issues
\nin higher education.<\/p>\n

The Communications Team at the Academy of Medical Sciences was
\nawarded the Athena Prize 2018 for an evidence-based, sustainable and
\nimpactful programme that has increased the visibility and participation
\nof female scientists in the media.<\/p>\n

The London Mathematical Society was awarded the Royal Society Athena
\nPrize in 2016 for their Women in Mathematics Committee in 2016.
\nIntroducing a broad range of initiatives in the field of mathematics
\nresulted in a change of culture that has happened nationwide, leading
\nthe way in increasing the number of women in mathematics.<\/p>\n
