PhD admission at Ghent university<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Prior to their scholarship application a<\/span>ll<strong> applicants need the&nbsp;explicit commitment of a Ghent University professor who will act as their personal PhD supervisor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you need to approach a Ghent university professor please browse&nbsp;<\/strong><span>the list of faculties and research topics available on our&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ugent.be\/en\/research\/research-ugent\/researchdirectory\/overview.htm\">research directory<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All international PhD candidates need to complete&nbsp; an&nbsp;<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ugent.be\/en\/research\/doctoralresearch\/enrolment-doctorate\/overview.htm\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admission procedure <\/a>during which the academic aspects (equivalence of your degree, research proposal, and language skills) will be evaluated.&nbsp;<b>This admission for a doctoral study does not guarantee any funding so it can be started <em>after<\/em> the result of the scholarship application is known.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>\nDuration and start date of the scholarship:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> earliest starting date<\/strong> of&nbsp;the scholarship at Ghent University is <strong>1 October 2020<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>The candidate obtains a scholarship for <strong>24 months to study at Ghent university (North)<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>24 months<\/strong> of the PhD research\/study must be <strong><strong>cofinanced <\/strong><\/strong>at the partner <strong>university in the South<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li>Students are obliged to divide the Ghent University scholarship into minimum <strong>2 different research stays<\/strong> in Ghent (North) and need to return at least <strong>once to their home university (South)&nbsp;<\/strong> in between (= <strong>\u2018sandwich- schedule\u2019<\/strong>);<\/li>\n<li>The following <strong>mobility scheme is mandatory<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>Students need to <strong>start and end<\/strong> with a <strong>research stay of minimum 3 up to maximum 12 months in Ghent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The<strong> first research stay in Ghent <\/strong>needs to<strong> start<\/strong> between<strong> 1 October 2020 and 28 February 2021.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At least <strong>24 months<\/strong> of locally funded <strong>research stay in the South must be scheduled in between the first and last research stay in Ghent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The average duration of PhD studies in Belgium (Ghent University) is 4 years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\nWho can apply for this scholarship<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span>The proposals must be <strong>jointly<\/strong> submitted by a <strong>candidate, a promoter (supervisor) at Ghent University and a supervisor at the partner university.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless&nbsp; preference will be given to topics that are<strong> relevant for development<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\nDevelopment relevance relates to the extent to<br \/>\nwhich the proposals\u2019 objectives are consistent with beneficiaries\u2019<br \/>\nrequirements, country needs, synergy opportunities, global priorities<br \/>\nand partners\u2019 and donors\u2019 policies.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"ftn1\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Candidates<\/strong> need to come from \u2013 and have the <strong>nationality<\/strong> of \u2013 a <strong>developing country<\/strong> (see country list);<\/li>\n<li>There must be a <strong>guarantee that the candidate will be able to<br \/>\n work fulltime on the PhD project for a period of 24 months at the<br \/>\npartner university<\/strong> <strong>in a selected developing country (South)<\/strong>. This implies that the following conditions needs to be fulfilled:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\">there must be a <strong>local PhD supervisor<\/strong> at the partner university or research center in the South;<\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\">A <strong>written statement<\/strong> is requested stating that the candidate will be\/is either a funded <strong>fulltime PhD student or a staff member<\/strong> at this partner university<\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\">and will be <strong>sufficiently exempted<\/strong><br \/>\n from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate<br \/>\non the PhD research in the South. Applicants can dedicate maximum 10 %<br \/>\nof their time (fulltime appointment) to other tasks (teaching and other<br \/>\ntasks)<\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\">This statement should also mention that the <strong>candidate receives a local PhD scholarship or salary for a period of 24 months<\/strong> when working on the PhD at the partner university in the South.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>This cofunding is only open for students who intend to obtain a <strong>(joint ) PhD degree at Ghent University<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>\nHow to apply for this scholarship<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Applications must be submitted on the application forms provided for this purpose.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in<br \/>\npart on the recommendations obtained from members of the Council for<br \/>\nDevelopment Cooperation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Selection criteria:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Please note that this call is highly competitive. The success<br \/>\nrate for this call is 19% (based on the results of the previous calls<br \/>\n2017-2019).
