\n The Lorenzo Natali Media Prize was launched in 1992 to recognise and celebrate excellence in reporting on sustainable development issues<\/strong>.
\n The Prize also gives a voice to those whose vital message is often
\noverlooked or ignored. It was created by DG DEVCO, and named after
\nLorenzo Natali, a precursor of European development policy.<\/p>\n

\n The Theme <\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n The overarching theme of the Lorenzo Natali Media Prize is journalism for sustainable development<\/b>. Entries to this year\u2019s competition should relate to international partnership issues<\/a>
\n such as, but not limited to, fighting poverty and inequalities, human
\nrights, democracy, youth, gender equality, environment and climate
\nchange, health, technology and digital, etc.<\/p>\n

\n
\n The applicants must choose one of these categories when filling in the application form. <\/b>The Prize is open to journalists in the following three categories:<\/p>\n

1. Grand Prize<\/b>: reporting published by a media based in one of the European Union\u2019s partner countries on development and cooperation.<\/p>\n

2. Europe Prize<\/b>: reporting published by a media based in the European Union*.<\/p>\n

3. Best Emerging Journalist Prize<\/b>: open to journalists under
\n30 whose reporting was published by a media based in the European Union*
\n or in one of its partner countries on development and cooperation.<\/p>\n

*For the 2020 Lorenzo Natali Media Prize, entries published in a
\nUK-based outlet are eligible if published between 10 March 2019 and 31
\nJanuary 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n

\n Who is Lorenzo Natali? <\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Established 28 years ago by the European Commission, the
\nLorenzo Natali Media Prize is awarded in memory of Lorenzo Natali, a
\nformer Commissioner for Development and staunch defender of freedom of
\nexpression, democracy, human rights and development. He served three
\nterms as one of Italy\u2019s European Commissioners.<\/p>\n

Natali played an important role in the EU accession process of
\nGreece, Spain and Portugal. He also helped enact key measures to combat
\npollution and improve living conditions across Europe. In his final
\nfour-year term as Commissioner, from 1985 until 1989, he was handed
\nresponsibility for cooperation and development policy in the Commission
\nunder President Jacques Delors. It was in this capacity that he set up a
\n broad network of relations with the governments and leaders of African,
\n Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries.<\/p>\n
