Download the<br \/>\napplication form <a href=\"http:\/\/aucpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/NMML2020submissionform.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Rules of entry and eligibility:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&nbsp;The award is open to contemporary novels, written and published in<br \/>\nArabic. Novellas, short stories collections, or poetry collections are<br \/>\nnot eligible.<\/li>\n<li>Only novels published in the last two years, between 1 March 2018 and 1 March 2020, are eligible.<\/li>\n<li>Self-published novels are not eligible.<\/li>\n<li>Submissions may be made by the author or the publisher.<\/li>\n<li>A publisher must have been publishing books for a minimum of three years to be eligible to submit a novel for the award.<\/li>\n<li>The author must be living at the time of submission.<\/li>\n<li>By submitting a novel, the author or publisher (depending on who<br \/>\nholds the English language rights) are considered to have agreed that,<br \/>\nin the event of their novel winning, it will be translated into English<br \/>\nand published worldwide by the AUC Press.<\/li>\n<li>By submitting a novel, the author is considered to have agreed to be<br \/>\n available for promotional activities such as media appearances related<br \/>\nto the award and\/or necessary travel within the Arab world.<\/li>\n<li>The AUC Press reserves the right to reject any submission that doesn\u2019t comply with the rules of entry.<\/li>\n<li>The judging panel\u2019s decision is final.<\/li>\n<li>The judges have the right to consider any novel published in the<br \/>\nabove time frame that has not been submitted for the award. Submissions for the award made by<br \/>\nauthors and publishers for 2019 will be automatically rolled over to<br \/>\nnext year\u2019s award.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">About the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Since 1996 the AUC Press has presented the annual Naguib Mahfouz<br \/>\nMedal for Literature, a major award in support of contemporary Arabic<br \/>\nliterature in translation.<\/p>\n<p>The award, consisting of a silver medal and a cash prize, as well as<br \/>\ntranslation and publication throughout the English-speaking world, is<br \/>\npresented annually on 11 December, the birthday of Nobel laureate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aucpress.com\/t-NM.aspx\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Naguib Mahfouz<\/a>,<br \/>\n by the President of the American University in Cairo in the presence of<br \/>\n the Minister of Culture and many other prominent leaders of Egypt\u2019s<br \/>\ncultural life.<\/p>\n<p>The Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature is awarded for the best<br \/>\ncontemporary novel published in Arabic (but not yet in English) in the<br \/>\nlast two years and is selected every fall by the Mahfouz Award<br \/>\nCommittee, which includes Ibrahim Nasrallah, acclaimed writer, novelist,<br \/>\n and literary critic; Hebba Sherif, writer, literary critic, and<br \/>\ncultural consultant; Samah Selim, translator and associate professor of<br \/>\nArabic language and literature at Rutgers University in the US; Shereen<br \/>\nAbouelnaga, literary critic and professor of English and comparative<br \/>\nliterature at Cairo University; and Humphrey Davies, award-winning<br \/>\ntranslator of Arabic literature into English.&nbsp; The award-winning book is<br \/>\n subsequently translated and published in an English-language edition by<br \/>\n the AUC Press in Cairo, New York, and London.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the award, Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz said: \u201cThe<br \/>\nannouncement of this award honoring writers and literature is the most<br \/>\npleasurable event on my birthday. I hope that this prize will also help<br \/>\nto discover new talents in Arabic literature and introduce them to<br \/>\nreaders around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American University in Cairo Press is the primary<br \/>\nEnglish-language publisher of Naguib Mahfouz and has published or<br \/>\nlicensed some 600 foreign-language editions of the Nobel laureate\u2019s<br \/>\nworks in 40 languages.<\/p>\n<p>The 24 winners of the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature since its<br \/>\ninauguration include 10 women, 14 men; 12 Egyptians (2 posthumously), 3<br \/>\nPalestinians, 1
