\nDepartment of Biology, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering up to two PhD scholarships in protein science commencing 01.10. 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment<\/span>
The positions are funded by the Danish Research Councils (Denmark) and the Thon foundation (Norway) and the students will be integrated as part of <\/span>the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Center REPIN- <\/span><\/span>rethinking protein interactions<\/span><\/em>. REPIN connects research groups in Copenhagen and Z\u00fcrich to study interactions of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) using a suite of biophysical methods and ranging from the single atom and molecule over ensembles to organisms. REPIN is also associated with the Linderstr\u00f8m-Lang Centre for Protein Science, and is situated in the Biocenter, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\n Project description<\/span>
Context constitutes an overarching concept being of physicochemical, biomolecular, and physiological nature, but it also includes the immediate molecular context of an interaction. For IDPs, which often function by exploiting short linear motifs, context contributes in highly regulatory and decisive manners and constitutes a yet largely unrecognized source of interaction potential in a multitude of biological processes. The projects will seek to promote the understanding of the role of flanking regions and context for discriminative binding, mapping mechanisms and specificity via kinetics and thermodynamics, as well as determining structures and ensembles. One project will focus on charge and charge patches in disordered regions in transcription factors and the other on disordered proteins interacting with large DNA clamps, such as proliferating cell nuclear antigens and the beta-clamp. The latter project is part of the TAMiR initiative (Targeting AMR by inhibition of bacterial stress responses) funded by Trond Mohn Stiftelsen, and involves collaborations with researchers in Norway.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
