For the eighth year the\u00a0Department of Social Anthropology and History\u00a0of the\u00a0University of the Aegean\u00a0and the\u00a0Institute of Migration and Ethnic Studies\u00a0of the\u00a0Universityof Amsterdam\u00a0welcome applications for the Postgraduate International Summer School \u2018CULTURES, MIGRATIONS, BORDERS\u2019 that will take place on the border island of\u00a0LESVOS, GREECE,\u00a0from\u00a02\u00a0to 11 JULY 2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The broader socioeconomic and political transformations in Africa and Asia have recently resulted in increased migration flows to Greece and, more generally, to Europe. Being at the crossroads of populations and cultures the islands of Eastern Aegean have served as one of the entry \u201cgates\u201d to Europe. In this context, and especially in connection to the current crisis, border crossings have become the focus of intense debates as they are intertwined with issues of culture and identity formation, the European Union and state policy, and constructions of \u2018otherness\u2019. By drawing on an increasing interest in the study of cultures, migrations and borders, our Summer School examines how migrations shape and are shaped by processes of boundary formation in a variety of cultural encounters.<\/p>\n

The North Eastern Aegean island of\u00a0LESVOS\u00a0provides an ideal location for holding this Summer School, as it is currently one of the more\u00a0important gates\u00a0of immigrants and refugees to Greece and Europe and the\u00a0site of a massive humanitarian intervention. The Summer School takes place as the\u00a0\u2018European Refugee Crisis\u2019\u00a0goes on taking new forms and in\u00a0times of radical transformations and the reconfiguration of borders\u00a0in national and international levels. The program aims to address\u00a0political, ethical and theoretical questions\u00a0in this challenging landscape.\u00a0<\/p>\n
